I WILL BE SWORN IN ON 12TH

National Super Alliance (Nasa) leader Raila Odinga has vowed to be sworn in as president on Jamhuri Day, just days after the coalition’s top brass had ruled out the move. In what is set to open a fresh political battlefront between the opposition and the government, Raila told supporters he will ‘take oath of office’ on December 12.

He made the remarks along Manyanja road in Umoja estate after his convoy was unable to reach the Jacaranda venue of a proposed Nasa rally, which resulted in confrontation between police and Nasa rioters. “(Tulisema wakiapisha, tunaapisha. Sasa nataka niseme hivi..kwamba tarehe kumi na mbili mimi nitaapishwa kama Rais na wananchi) On December 12, we will have an assembly that will swear me in as earlier promised,” Odinga told a charged crowd chanting anti-government slogans.
The swearing-in, he said, will be based on the results of August 8 presidential election, which he claims he won, but was rigged through manipulation of figures. Raila’s move is faced with legal constraints since President Uhuru Kenyatta was yesterday sworn in for his second term.
The law stipulates that only a candidate declared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) as having been duly elected can be sworn in by the Chief Justice.
But the defiant Opposition leader told supporters in Manyanja, Embakasi and reiterated later in Kibera that powers will be bestowed on him by the citizenry where he will be the ‘People’s President.’

The MPs drawn from coastal ODM and Wiper teams said they had withdrawn their names from the House committees which are in the process of composition. It all started after Speaker Justin Muturi read to the House a list of the Minority leadership which was presented to his office as he had directed before members went on the short recess.

NASA yet to submit committee nominees as Parliament resumes

The National Assembly will convene Wednesday morning while colleagues in the Senate will sit later in the afternoon.
Before going on recess, National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi and his Senate counterpart Kenneth Lusaka vowed to press on with the formation of the committees when Parliament convenes if the Minority Coalition will still not come up with its list.
The Minority Coalition had engaged the Speakers of both Houses of Parliament requesting for more time to come up with official lists of nominees and it remains to be seen which reasons they will offer in the eventuality they fail to produce the same.
